Food and Sleep

Welcome Back!!

To snack or not to snack, that is the question.......

We all love a late night snack, but did you know a late night snack might be the reason you can't sleep?!  According to the Mayo Clinic, eating late at night can make it harder to sleep. But all is not lost!! Here are a few tips to help you get the rest that you need, even after a late night snack.

1. Avoid large, high-fat meals late in the day.
2. Avoid caffeine late in the day and alcohol at bedtime.
3. Don't drink too many fluids before bedtime.
4. Maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Keeping these tips in mind can help you get a good nights rest. According to the CDC, adults need about 7-8 hours of sleep a day to be the most productive. Don't allow the sandman to win!! Try your best to get as much done throughout the day and get to bed at a decent time.

  1. I thought youR article was interesting, and informative. I'm definitely not getting the right amount of sleep that was suggested in your post. Now I know why. I should stop drinking so many energy drinks, and drinking before I go to sleep. I thought it was funny when you mentioned, "don't let the sandman win".

  2. I really like your post. At some point I used to always eat late. It was so bad and such a second nature that my body would know it was time to eat a meal after I got off work. I really like what you are getting at. Some people may use food as a comfort to go to sleep or go back to sleep but overall they are keeping themselves up. Good job!!!

  3. Between softball and school, I am never getting the right amount of sleep I need. With my mom being a nurse, she has always told me these things. Of course it is my mom though, so I didn't listen. Who knew she was so right! I always have a small snack before bed and drink a lot of water to get me hydrated for the next day of softball. I will have to stop these especially drinking so much coffee in the afternoon to keep me awake and running. Can't wait to read more of about what is affecting my sleep.

  4. This is very interesting because I never really thought about eating before bed causing me to not sleep. It completely makes sense and I am glad that now I know. As I am sure all of us are, I am a very busy person and sometimes I can't even eat dinner until right before bed so this was very helpful in knowing what to avoid in order to get a good night's sleep. Great job

  5. I enjoy late night snacking and I heard that it is suggested not to eat three or so hours before bed to help with digestion and visiting the bathroom so often during the night. Informative post, good suggestions for night routines.

  6. I really enjoyed reading your post! I have a bad habit of not eating breakfast, hardly anything for lunch then I gorge for supper. I know that eating this way will affect my sleep habits and also affect my weight. I look forward to your next post!

  7. Thank you for your post! I enjoyed this because I think many people can relate to this. I love to snack but definitely know that it is probably not the best thing to be doing, especially when you do it just because you are bored. This was a very informative post, so thank you!
